The Library at OBU

The Library at Oxford Brookes University

For those starting at Oxford Brookes, it is important to know how to make the most of the facilities on offer. in particular the Library in the Headington Building. The library is open all day, so students living on campus can do research for study even late into the night.

There are 3 levels for the Library, positioned on the second,Third and Fourth floors and is laid out like this:

The Dewy Decimal Classification system:
Definition- Every item in the Library is assigned a number between 000-999, which details the subject of the book and therefore informs where it can be found in the library.

Library Online: The Library also has a website where students and staff can search for books and articles as Ebooks or PDFs. You will need a Brookes account in order to access them. Unfortunately not everything in the Library is available as an Ebook, however the website can detail if a physical copy is in stock and you can request the copy to be held so you can collect it.

Taking out books: Each student is issued with a Pass, they will need this when checking out books as the Librarian can scan the pass so the system is aware that you have taken out the book and when you have returned it. You are given a set number of days in which you can borrow the book, so they know if it's overdue.

Study Zones: These are areas where students are able to study quietly, with access to computers to complete electronic work. There are also help zones, where you can seek support from members of staff.
The Academic Liaison Librarian, Joanna Cooksey, is on hand to offer support to students if they struggling to find the appropriate books, articles or documentation they are looking for. She offers 1-1 appointments which can be booked by emailing her at jcooksey@brookes.ac.uk

For those concerned about health and safety their are multiple fire exits for people to evacuate the building from in the event of a dangerous incident. Furthermore, there are several Bins, which divide Rubbish divided it to specific categorises to simplify recycling and disposal spread throughout the building, especially in the dining areas.
Solar Panels can be found on top of the JHB Building, they reduce the buildings carbon emissions by 4% as well as supplying electricity.
Rain water from the roof is stored in the central courtyard around 50% is recycled, either for drinking or used in the Toilet facilities. By controlling the flow of water from the roof, it decreases the chance of blocking the sewer system.

The JHB building has 5 levels which can be accessed via several flights of stairs or elevators.
